"Mooh meetha karwao!" There's no polite way to say no to that sentence. Someone has got a new home, a new baby, a good result or a new job, and the first thing everyone wants is sweets.
The trouble starts when you're the one buying. Griha pravesh needs one kind of sweet, a new baby another, and a promotion something that fits in a bag. This is a quick guide to matching mithai to the occasion, written from our sweet shop on 100 Ft Road, Ballabgarh.
Griha pravesh: the puja comes first
At a housewarming, the puja ends with prasad, and sweets are part of that. Adani Realty's guide to the ritual lists sweets and fruits, such as coconut sweets and bananas, offered as prasad during the puja. After that comes the part everyone remembers, which is feeding the guests.
So think of it as two jobs. One is a small, simple offering for the puja itself: boondi, ladoo or peda are the usual picks, and our puja prasad post has more on that. The other is something to hand to guests as they leave, and here you have more freedom.
For the second job, go for variety, not quantity. A box with ladoo, barfi and one or two milk sweets lets everyone find something they like. Practices differ between families, so check with the elders and your pandit ji before you order.
Matching sweet to occasion
None of this is a rule. It's how we'd choose if we were buying for ourselves.
| Occasion | What we'd pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Griha pravesh | Boondi or besan ladoo for the puja, a mixed box for guests | Simple offering first, then something for everyone |
| New baby | Motichoor ladoo or Mathura peda | Ladoo is the sweet most people think of for good news, and peda is easy to share in a small piece |
| Exam result or admission | Kaju Katli or Pista Barfi | A result is a celebration, so it deserves the good box |
| New job or promotion | Kaju Katli or a small mixed box | Easy to carry to the office, and easy to share round |
| A new shop or business | Ladoo and one milk sweet | Something simple that can be handed out to every customer who walks in |
| Visiting with a gift | Small box of everyday favourites | You don't need a huge box to say thank you |
A few good picks, from our menu
- Motichoor Ladoo₹480/ kg

- Kaju Katli₹1,000/ kg

Box or loose?
If you're buying for one house, loose sweets by weight let you pick exactly what you want. If you're handing out several parcels, a ready box saves you the trouble of packing.
Our gift boxes come in three sizes. Choti Bhent is a neat box of everyday favourites like ladoo, barfi and peda, and our page lists it for visits, thank-yous and small pujas. Badi Bhent is an assorted family box with milk sweets, ladoos and our signature barfis. Shahi Bhent is the premium one, with kaju sweets and dry-fruit specials in gold-foil packing. See all three on our gift boxes page.
Two small things people forget
Check the elders' preferences. If someone in the house can't have much sugar, or avoids certain ingredients, say so when you order, and ask the counter what's in anything you're unsure about.
Buy on the day, or the day before. Milk sweets taste freshest on the day you buy them. If you're not sure how long something keeps, our fresh mithai check shows how to tell at the counter.
खुशी कोई भी हो, मुँह मीठा ज़रूर होFor ladoos and barfis in more detail, start with our sweet shop menu. If a bigger function is coming, our services page covers larger orders.
